This led to his return to the United States.He later enlisted in the United States Army in Sept. 6, 1941, during World War II. Carter’s experience led him to be promoted as Staff Sergeant later to a Sergeant.
In 1944 he was sent to Europe and was assigned to supply duties. Carter develop a strong bond with Gen. George S. Patton. They both had experiences where they had fought.

He eventually served in the "Mystery Division" of blacks in Patton's Third Army. 12th Armored Division. During a battle in Germany in 1945 in World War II. Edward A. Carter killed a number of German soldiers and captured two, he sustained six wounds. He was honorably discharged from the Army in September 1945. Carter attempted to re- enlist in the army, but he was refused, as his loyalty was questioned as he had fought with the Japanese and had been exposed to communism.
Carter died on January 30 1963 in Los Angeles. Edward Allen Carter, Jr. was one of the seven African American servicemen whose actions and strong courage in World War II were reviewed and he was given the Medal of Honor. President Clinton presented the award to his family in 1996, his remains have since been moved to Arlington National Cemetery.
